Alan W. Reichow, OD, MEd, FAAO
Founder, President & CEO
Dr. Alan Reichow, Professor Emeritus from Pacific University, began investigating the role of vision in human performance 40+ years ago. While a student-athlete at Montana State University, where he was a member of the 1976 NCAA Division 1AA National Championship Football Team, he conducted his initial research project on vision in sport, the first of more than 80 studies to follow. As a graduate student in 1979, Dr. Reichow Co-founded the Pacific University Sports Vision Program, the oldest such program in the world, which provides educational, eye protective, clinical, research and consultant services. In addition to his Doctorate from Pacific University, he received a Master’s in Education Degree to address the needs of the student-athlete more thoroughly. During Dr. Reichow’s 26 years on faculty he taught the core course “Environmental, Occupational & Recreational Vision”, and elective courses, “Sports and Recreational Vision” and “Clinical and Classroom Observation of Learning Difficulties” and served as Director of Community Vision Screening Services. He lectured on the role of vision in education and sport during numerous Teacher’s In-Service Programs throughout the U.S. Dr. Reichow has provided comprehensive protective, diagnostic, remedial and enhancement vision care services to thousands of professional and amateur athletes, and worked with many corporations, Olympic Teams, amateur and professional sports organizations, first responder groups, and military/tactical entities. Dr. Reichow began volunteering for Special Olympics in the early 70’s, and in 1979 started investigating the need for vision care services, particularly eye injury prevention, among Special Olympians. Based on these early efforts, Dr. Reichow and the late Dr. Paul Berman, with support of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, expanded the program when they served as Co-Directors of the 1991 International Special Olympics Vision Care Program. This demonstration project served as the basis for what is now the Special Olympics Lion’s Club International Opening Eyes Program and became a template for other global Special Olympics healthcare initiatives. Dr. Reichow served as Chief Consultant to the Sports Medicine Vision Care Centers for all athletes participating in the 1992 Winter and Summer Olympic Games; was Director of Standards for the European Academy of Sports Vision; was board member and Chair of the American Optometric Association’s Sports Vision Section and served on the Nike Golf Advisory Board. Dr. Reichow received his Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry, presented the Moss Memorial Lecture during the International Optometric and Optical League Conference, was Keynote Speaker for the United Kingdom’s Sports Vision Association Inaugural Symposium, was awarded the Optometrist of the Year Award by the Sports Vision Section of the American Optometric Association, received the Faculty Achievement Award from Pacific University, and was granted Professor Emeritus from Pacific University. He has authored many articles related to vision in sport and has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr. Reichow served as vision consultant to Nike, Inc. from 1994 to 2006, applying sound vision science principles to product innovation across numerous Nike categories. Among the many Nike products he was involved in development of, Dr. Karl Citek and Dr. Reichow invented the SportSight Contact Lens under Paragon Vision Sciences, which was later marketed as Nike MaxSight. In 2006 he became Nike’s Global Research Director for Vision Science and is listed as inventor on more than 50 Utility Patents. Besides his vision care community outreach efforts with school systems, underserved inner city youth, migrant populations, Special Olympics, first responders, and military /tactical personnel, Dr. Reichow has coached various youth sports programs. Dr. Reichow and his wife, Debra, who also holds a Master’s in Education Degree, have been married for 28 years. They have always shared a passion for mentoring youth, as she taught and coached in elementary and junior high school grades.
